Fresh off being named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for women’s basketball, University of Wisconsin-Superior’s  Sally Linzmeier was at it again Wednesday night at UW-La Crosse.

With the help of Linsmeier’s fourth straight double-double, the Yellowjackets won their sixth straight game with a 61-42 win over the UWLC Eagles before a crowd of 140 at Mitchell Hall.

Linzmeier, a junior guard from Valders, Wis., had 22 points and 12 rebounds as UWS improved to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in the WIAC.

Vanessa Lebens added 12 points and Britnee Blake had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Yellowjackets, who host UW-Stevens Point at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Mallory Cramer had 14 points to lead the Eagles (7-7, 1-4), who were held to 26 percent shooting while committing 23 turnovers.

Leading 31-29 early in the second half, the Yellowjackets went on a 15-2 run for a 46-31 lead. The Eagles got no closer than 11 points the remainder of the game.

A pre-season All-American, Linzmeier had three double-doubles last week as the Yellowjackets won three times coming out of the Christmas.

On Monday, Dec. 30, Linzmeier scored 10 points, shooting 5-of-7 from the field and grabbed 10 rebounds in 18 minutes to help the Yellowjackets win at Northland, 71-45.

The following day the Yellowjackets dug themselves a deep hole early, but they dug their way out and took down Twin Ports-rival St. Scholastica 75-63. Linzmeier scored 18 points and went 12-for-12 from the free-throw line, and also had 15 rebounds.

On Saturday the Yellowjackets, behind Linzmeier’s 13 points and 19 rebounds picked up their first conference win of the season, 61-47 over UW-Platteville. 

For the week Linzmeier scored 41 points, grabbed 44 rebounds and dished out 12 assists. She also had seven steals. 

“What can you say about Sally that hasn’t already been said? She’s one of the best players in the conference, if not the country,” UWS coach Don Mulhern said. “She is passionate about the game of basketball and is driven to succeed and help her team win. She has set a great example for our team with her work ethic and leadership and she is only going to continue to get better.” 

’JACKET JOTTINGS: UWS has won of the last four meetings with UWLC. … Linzmeier’s double-double was her sixth of the season.

Milestone Watch

Linzmeier continues to climb the charts in several categories of the Yellowjacket record book. She moved into 14th place on the all-time scoring chart (889), passing Lindsey Anderson (2001-05) Wednesday. She has also moved into second on the all-time steals list with 194, needing 24 to set a new school mark. Mandy Giffen (1994-99) currently holds the record of 217. Linzmeier also moved in the top 15 in rebounds and near the top 10 in assists (22 away).

Men’s Game

UWS dropped its fourth consecutive game after losing at UW-La Crosse 79-51 on Wednesday.

The Eagles, who have defeated the Yellowjackets seven straight times, shot more than 65 percent in the first half on their way to building a 49-26 halftime lead. The Yellowjackets shot just 39 percent for the game, including 3-for-17 from 3-point range.

Aaron Corry scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Yellowjackets (4-9 overall, 1-3 WIAC).

Trent Schmidt led all scorers with 15 points for UWLC (10-4, 4-1).

Leading 14-10, La Crosse blew the game open with a 12-2 run. After missing its first 3-point attempt of the game, the Eagles made nine straight, finished 10-of-14 from long range in the first half.

The closest UWS got in the second half was 20 points.

UWS hosts UW-Stevens Point at 3 p.m. Saturday.
