The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball team had the first-place UW-Whitewater right where they wanted them — leading 70-61 with around six minutes remaining Saturday afternoon at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

But the Warhawks, who entered the game undefeated in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, went on an 18-0 run to turn the nine-point deficit into a nine-point advantage, 79-70 with 56 seconds remaining.

Britnee Blake’s fading jumper stopped the run for UWS, but it wouldn’t be enough as Whitewater went on to win 84-79 and improve to 13-3 overall and 7-0 in the WIAC.

The disappointing loss drops the Yellowjackets to 9-6 and 3-4.

The Yellowjackets had four players score in double figures, led by Sally Linzmeier’s 22 points. The junior also had a game-highs with 11 assists, four steals and two blocked shots.

UWS also got 12 points from Brynn Liljander, 11 points from Deandra Vavra and 10 from Hadley Skalmoski.

Amy Mandrell had the hot hand for Whitewater with 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting. She also grabbed 11 rebounds. Mary Merg added 11 points and Kaitlyn Thill and Kristen Ruchti had 10 points apiece.

UWS played a near-perfect first half. After Whitewater scored first it was pretty much all Yellowjackets as they took a 22-12 lead on a Blake basket.

Superior’s largest lead of 42-23 came on a Vavra 3-pointer with 2:45 left in the first half.

Whitewater rebounded a bit and finished the first half with a 9-2 run to cut Superior’s lead to 45-32 at the half.

Skamloski’s basket gave UWS a 47-32 seconds into the second half, but an 8-0 run got UWW within 56-50 and forced the Yellowjackets to call a time out.

UWS managed to get its lead back to 63-52 on a Blake 3-pointer with 10:15 remaining, but UWW eventually put together its 18-0 run, which was too much for the ’Jackets to overcome.

UWS hosts UW-River Falls at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
