Ninth overall pick Anthony Barr signed a four-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings that includes $12.75 million guaranteed.

Barr landed with the Vikings after Minnesota moved back from the eighth spot in a draft-day trade with the Cleveland Browns.

Barr was a pass rusher who played mostly as a pass-rushing outside linebacker at UCLA, where he played only two years on defense. He’s 6-5, 255, but first-year head coach Mike Zimmer projects Barr to strong-side linebacker. The converted running back picked up the basics of the Vikings’ defensive scheme quickly, according to Zimmer.

“The things he’s done defensively, he’s done pretty well. Like today, we just lined up and ran some plays. He played behind the line of scrimmage some, we didn’t blitz him,” Zimmer said at the team’s weekend minicamp. “He’s just learning coverage and run responsibilities, where to be. Actually he did that really, really well. Watched him a lot; I don’t think it’s going to be an issue whatsoever.”

Barr will not be able to get back on the field with the Vikings until minicamp June 17-19. The junior must wait for classes to end at UCLA, per NFL rules, before rejoining the team.

Barr said he will be in regular contact with the team, and linebackers coach Adam Zimmer is planning at least one trip to California to work with him.
