Vikings: Matt Cassel will start regular-season opener

By Chris Tomasson

In an expected move, FOX Sports reported Monday morning that Vikings players have been informed Matt Cassel will start at quarterback to open the regular season.

Cassel has been battling rookie Teddy Bridgewater for the starting job. It’s expected Vikings coach Mike Zimmer will make the move official at a press conference late Monday morning.

Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson had told the Pioneer Press on Sunday he believed Cassel had the advantage to be the starter for the Sept. 7 regular-season opener at St. Louis.

“Right now, I feel like, just my personal opinion, I feel like Matt has the edge,” Peterson said. “Going off of understanding the offense and who’s running the offense better right now, you know, nothing to do with talent-wise, so that’s why Matt (has the edge). He’s been here. He’s a veteran guy. This is Teddy’s first year, so I feel like we are in a good position to even be having that conversation (about quarterback competition).”

Zimmer had declined after Saturday’s 30-12 preseason win at Kansas City to offer anything new on the battle for the starting job.

Cassel completed 9 of 17 passes for 152 yards with a touchdown and an interception in 2{ quarters against the Chiefs. Bridgewater played the rest of the way and went 4 of 7 for 40 yards with two TDs.

In three preseason games, Cassel has completed 26 of 39 attempts for 367 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Bridgewater is 26 of 40 for 266 yards with four TDs and no interceptions.
