UWS women sweep Finlandia; hoop teams split with UWP

The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s hockey team swept a pair of game from Finlandia, while the Yellowjacket basketball teams split a home doubleheader with UW-Platteville.

 Women’s HockeyThe Yellowjackets got the new off to a good start by defeating the Lions 5-2 Saturday and 4-1 Sunday in Hancock, Mich. The wins improve UWS to 9-2-4 on the season, while Finlandia falls to 0-10.In Saturday’s win, Haley Olmstead and Karen Larson each scored two goals and Dani Schultz added a goal and an assist as UWS outshot the Lions 44-18.Shanley Peters made eight saves for UWS (8-2-4).Alexandra Chutskoff and Brittney Coleman each scored a goal and Breanna Hynes stopped 39 shots for Finlandia (0-9).
On Sunday, Finlandia scored first, but Superior answered four straight goals to complete the sweep.Hailey Adair, Karen Larson, Schultz and Alison Shrift scored for the Yellowjackets and Peters finished with 18 saves.Brock Nelson scored for the Lions and Breanna Merriam had 33 saves.UWS will play a home-and-home series with St. Benedict’s this weekend. The Yellowjackets built a 30-22 halftime lead by holding the Pioneers to just eight field goals. In the second half, UWS stretched its lead to 16 with 12:47 to play. Wisconsin-Platteville cut the lead to 10 with just under five minutes remaining, but could get no closer.The Yellowjackets were led by Sally Linzmeier’s 13 points and 19 rebounds.
