UWS women skate past Augsburg; hoop teams split with Northwestern

The University of Wisconsin-Superior women's hockey team defeated Augsburg 3-1 Tuesday night in Minneapolis.

The Yellowjackets got goals from Karen and Lynne Larson and Kelsey Firkus as they improved to 6-2-3 on the season.

Also for UWS, Dani Schultz and Sheryl Kaskiw picked up a pair of assists each and Kim Kobar made 21 saves in goal to notch her first collegiate win.

Karen Larson scored the only goal of first period. After Darby Lindgren scored for the Auggies, Lynne Larson gave the Yellowjackets the lead back and Kelsey Firkus helped seal the victory with her first goal of the season on a power play with 1:48 remaining in the second period.

Darby Lindgren scored a goal and Brianna Schulz stopped 29 shots for Augsburg (3-6).

UWS plays at Marian at 7 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday.

Women's basketball

Sally Linzmeier had 16 points to lead a balanced offense as UWS beat Northwestern 77-52 in a nonconference women's game before 127 fans Tuesday night at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

Grace Kennedy added 12 points and Dana Karlstad chipped in with 11 points for the Yellowjackets (3-4), who led 30-23 at halftime before shooting 50 percent in the second half to pull away.

Chanel Madson had 16 points to lead Northwestern (5-3).

The UWS women play at Bethany Lutheran at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Men's basketball

UWS lost to Northwestern 79-67 in a nonconference game Tuesday in Superior.

The Yellowjackets held Northwestern to just 36 percent shooting from the field and led 31-30 at halftime, but the Eagles exploded for 49 points in the second half on 57 percent shooting.

UWS kept the score close until Northwestern went on a 12-2 run over two minutes midway through the half and put the game away.

Jarrod Peterson lead all scorers with 24, while Zach Schradle chipped in 12 points for the Yellowjackets (3-5).

Steven Willey scored 20 to pace Northwestern (3-4).

The Yellowjackets host Buena Vista at 7 p.m. Saturday.
