UWS sweeps Stevens Point; Lady ’Jackets go 1-3 on weekend
The University of Wisconsin-Superior baseball team scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning on Sunday to rally for a 4-3 victory at UW-Stevens Point and a sweep of the teams’ Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.
The Pointers began the day in first place in the WIAC. The losses drop them to second place with records of 5-3 and 17-4 overall.
With the wins, the Yellowjackets move into fifth place with record of 12-7 and 4-4.
Monday’s doubleheader with Stevens Point was postponed because of snow.
In the opening game — finished Sunday after being postponed by rain in the second inning Saturday — the Yellowjackets won 11-3.
UWS trailed 3-1 after seven innings in the late game before Sam Holden’s one-out, two-run single tied the game. The next batter, Alex Quinones, also singled to drive in what would be the game-winning run.
Yellowjacket starter Damian Wiblin pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out six. He allowed a one-out double in the ninth to put the tying run in scoring position but then shut down the Pointers to preserve the victory.
In the opener, the Yellowjackets started the day with a 2-0 lead after Tom Fairbanks’ two-run homer in the first inning on Saturday. Fairbanks homered again in the top of the fourth — a grand slam — and Quinones added a solo home run later in the inning to put UWS up 8-0.
Travis Elwood pitched eight innings Sunday for the win.
UWS is scheduled to host UW-Platteville at noon Thursday and Friday.
UWS went 1-3 over the weekend. The Yellowjackets split a doubleheader Saturday at UW-River Falls, and then dropped two games at UW-Stout on Sunday.
River Falls won 13-12 in the opener, and UWS won game two 6-5.
Stout won by scores of 5-4 and 6-0 Sunday.
In their loss Saturday, the Yellowjackets gave up eight runs in the sixth inning to lose an 11-5 lead.
In the second game, left fielder Sally Linzmeier went 3-for-4 and scored three runs, while pitcher Nicolle Gross allowed eight hits, five runs and struck out four for the victory.
Trailing 3-0 in the opener at Stout, Superior took a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh. Unfortunately, the Blue Devils scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the victory.
UWS had four hits. Melissa Clark had a triple and two RBIs; and Britnee Blake, Taylor Johnson and Anna Morgan had a hit apiece.
Gross took the loss, allowing nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Superior had six hits in game two, two by Blake and one each by Kristen Haider, Linzmeier, Katie Wilke and Johnson.
Superior (18-9, 1-5) is scheduled to play at Northland College at 1 p.m. today and host UW-Stevens Point at 3 p.m. Thursday.
