UWS soccer teams lose season openers
The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s soccer team fell to 0-1 for the first time every under coach Joe Mooney with a 2-0 loss Friday night at Elmhurst (Ill.) College.
Both Elmhurt goals came in the first half with a long throw-in bouncing off a couple heads, lastly by Brett Stiffler, in the 19th minute to put the Yellowjackets down 1-0. Elmhurst’s Mike Emig beat UWS senior goalkeeper Matt Elder one-on-one in the 41st minute for the second goal.
UWS continues play in Elmhurst at 4 p.m. Saturday against the University of Dubuque.
Augsburg blanks Yellowjackets
The UWS women also lost its season opener 8-0 to Augsburg College on Friday night in Minneapolis.
Augsburg scored 29 seconds apart in the fifth minute to go ahead 2-0. Marie Fitzgerald scored twice in the 15th and 21st minutes to put UWS down 4-0, while Kaitlyn Terrio added two second-half goals for Augsburg.
Friday’s game was the debut for UWS coach Morgan MacLean of Duluth. He’ll make his home debut when the Yellowjackets return to Superior for their next contest against Martin Luther College at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
