University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s hockey team and goaltender Shanley Peters are on a roll.

Peters, a senior from Gnadenthal, Manitoba, posted her third and fourth straight shutouts as the Yellowjackets blanked UW-Eau Claire by identical 5-0 scores over the weekend.

Peters, who has six shutouts on the season, had 14 saves Friday night at Wessman Arena, then 18 more Saturday afternoon before a Hobbs Ice Center crowd of 167. Peters hasn’t allowed a goal in more than 270 minutes.

As a team, the Yellowjackets are on a seven-game winning streak and are 9-2 in their last 11 games. The winning streak is the fifth-longest in school history, and the unbeaten streak is tied for third longest.

On Friday, UWS got goals from Haley Olmstead, Kiara DeKezel, Kerry Mayhew, Dani Schultz and Mara Techendorf.

Paige Turner stopped 41 shots for the Blugolds.

On Saturday, Alexis Reid scored twice and Kelsey Firkus, Olmstead and Mahyew each scored once as the Yellowjackets improved to 14-2-4 overall.

UWS also moved into a tie for second place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with UW-River Falls with record of 4-2-2.

UWS hosts UWRF at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The game is also the annual “Stick it to Cancer” game, with the Yellowjackets wearing special limited edition orange jerseys, the cancer color of leukemia.

The jerseys will be auctioned off following the game, with the proceeds going toward leukemia awareness and research in Superior and Douglas County.

’JACKET JOTTINGS: Peters is now 13-2-4 on the season. ... Over the weekend Teal Crosson and Shrift each played their 100th career games; Schultz scored her 45th goal, good for third all time; Sheryl Kaskiw notched her 57th assist, which is second all time; and Mayhew moved to No. 9 on the all-time assist and points lists with 39 and 66, respectively. … Peters is third in games played (64), third in minutes played (3816:17), fourth in wins (37), second in saves (1,334), and fourth in shutouts (11).

Women down UWP

Junior guard Sally Linzmeier had 26 points as the visiting Yellowjcket women’s basketball team moved into sole possession of fourth place in the WIAC with a 75-71 win  over UW-Platteville Saturday before 247 fans at Bo Ryan Court.

The Yellowjackets are 11-6 overall and 5-4 in the WIAC, on game ahead of UWP (10-8, 4-5).

Linzmeier also had seven rebounds, seven assists and six steals.

Brynn Liljander added 15 points and Britnee Blake chipped in with 10 points for the Yellowjackets, who shot 49 percent in winning for the ninth time in the past 11 games.

UWS hosts Northland College at 7 p.m. Tuesday and plays at Stevens Point at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Men’s Hockey

The UWS men’s hockey team lost and tied over the weekend at UW-Stevens Point.

After the Yellowjackets and Pointers skated to a 4-4 tie Friday night at K.B. Willett Arena, Superior lost 8-3 Saturday night.

The Yellowjackets got a goal each from Michael Rey, Jeff Forsythe and Pat Dalbec, and goalies Drew Strandberg and Zach Thompson combined to make 22 saves as they fell to 6-10-3 overall and 1-3-2 in the WIAC.

In Friday’s tie, Dalbec scored a goal and assisted on two others. Rey, Forsythe and Joey Massingham also scored, and Dayne Belfour finished with 32 saves in goal.

UWS hosts River Falls at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Men’s hoops

Jim Stocki scored 17 points as host UW-Platteville used a big second half to beat UWS 76-62 Saturday afternoon.

Center Bronson Byrne had 19 points and Jarrod Peterson added 18 to lead UWS (5-13, 2-7), which plays at UW-Stevens Point at 3 p.m. Saturday.
