UWS RDP: UWS hoop teams win; hockey teams play on the road
Senior guard Jarrod Peterson scored 32 points on 13-for-20 shooting to lead the University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s basketball team to a 95-68 rout over Buena Vista (4-4) Saturday night at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.
Peterson, who has carried UWS offensively this season at 21.8 points per game, added six rebounds, four assists and three steals for the Yellowjackets (4-5).
Tilyn Hollis added 14 points and seven assists, and Brian Lindblom added 12 points and five rebounds for UWS.
Cole Darrow and Greg Sibenaller had nine points apiece to lead Buena Vista .
The Yellowjackets return to action at 6 p.m. on Dec. 27 when they take on George Fox at the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas, Nev.
Sally Linzmeier had 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the UWS women to an 82-60 nonconference victory over Bethany Lutheran on Saturday in Mankato, Minn.
Brynn Liljander added 12 points and Vanessa Lebens chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds for the Yellowjackets (4-4), who shot 48 percent and had a 51-35 rebounding advantage. Fourteen players scored for UWS.
Rudy Ruffin had 17 points to lead the Vikings (1-6).
The Yellowjackets return to action at 7 p.m. on Dec. 30 against Northland in Ashland.
The UWS women won and tied with Marian over the weekend in Fond du Lac. The Yellowjackets won Friday’s game 4-0, and the two teams skated to a 2-2 tie Saturday afternoon.
Kelsey Firkus, Amanda Coey, Dani Schultz and Karen Larson scored for the Yellowjackets and Shanley Peters picked up the shutout in goal with 12 saves on Friday night before a crowd of 68.
In Saturday’s 2-2 tie, Caitlyn Hunt scored the go-ahead goal to give the Yellowjackets the lead with 5:15 seconds to play, but the Sabres’ Kaitlyn Johnson answered just 14 seconds later to knot the game at two.
Schultz scored the Yellowjackets’ other goal, while Hayley Epema and Kerry Meyhew each had an assist.
Peters made 14 saves for UWS (7-2-4).
The’Jackets play again at Finlandia Jan. 4-5.

The UWS men’s hockey had a disappointing weekend in Upper Michigan with a tie and loss against the Finlandia Lions, who entered the weekend with a record of 0-10.
After a 3-3 overtime tie on Friday, the Lions blanked the Yellowjackets 3-0 on Saturday.
UWS outshot the Lions 82-40 in the two games but struggled putting the puck in the net to fall to 4-7-2 on the season.
Goalie Dayn Belfour made 21 saves for UWS and Andrew Brownlee stopped 40 for Finlandia, which got goals from Collin Saint-Onge, Brandon Passley and Sean Burke.
Owen Stauber scored his first college goal for UWS in Friday’s tie. The Yellowjackets also got a shorthanded goal from Michael Rey and a power-play goal from Cody Hotchkin.
Drew Strandberg had 16 saves for UWS.
The Yellowjackets don’t play again until Jan. 10 when they face Bethel at 7 p.m. in Blaine, Minn.
