UWS men win in OT; women's unbeaten streak stopped at 11 games
The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s hockey team and UW-River Falls played to a pair of 2-1 games this weekend at Wessman Arena.
The visiting Falcons won Friday’s game, while Pat Dalbec scored the game-winning goal in overtime on Saturday.
Dalbec also assisted on Connor Faupel’s goal, which game the Yellowjaciets a 1-0 lead 6:01 into the second period.
River Falls force overtime when former Superior Spartan Mitch Kontny scored unassisted with 13:48 remaining in the third period.
Dalbec’s goal was assisted by Michael Rey and Jeff Forstyhe 4:46 into overtime.
Dayne Belfour picked up the win in goal for UWS (7-11-3 overall, 2-4-2 WIAC) with 32 saves. Scott Lewan also had 32 saves for the league-leading Falcons (12-6-2, 5-3).
On Friday night all the ’Jackets could muster offensively was Rey’s short-handed goal off assists from Dalbec and Forsythe.
Jon Schreiner and Kontny each scored a goal for River Falls.
Drew Strandberg made 18 saves for the Yellowjackets and Lewan stopped 38 shots for UWRF.
UWS plays at UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Chloe Kinsel scored twice during a three-goal second period to lead UW-River Falls past UWS 4-1 in a WIAC game Saturday afternoon at Wessman Arena.
Kinsel scored her ninth and 10th goals of the season as the fifth-ranked Falcons (14-4-3 overall, 5-2-2 WIAC) overcame an early 1-0 deficit and ended the eighth-ranked Yellowjackets’ seven-game win streak and 11-game unbeaten streak.
Kerry Mayhew scored the only goal for the Yellowjackets (14-3-4, 4-3-2) on a power play 12:14 into the first period.
Emily Stark tied it up for the Falcons 11:14 into the second period. The freshman from Little Falls, Minn., is the daughter of Superior natives Bob and Beth Stark.
Dani Sibley completed the scoring with five minutes remaining in the third period.
Ashley Kuechle had 25 saves for River Falls, while UWS goaltender Shanley Peters had 37 saves.
UWS plays River Falls again at 2 p.m. Saturday at W.H. Arena in River Falls.
’JACKET JOTTINGS: UWS had its 11-game unbeaten streak stopped with the loss. … Shanley also had her four-game shutout streak stopped and allowed her first goal in almost 280 minutes. … River Falls took five penalties for 10 minutes, while the Yellowjackets took four for eight minutes. On the power play the Yellowjackets went 1-for-4 and the Falcons were 1-for-5.
