UWS falls in title game, Point gets tourney bid

The season came to an end for the University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s hockey team with a 3-0 loss to UW-Eau Claire in the inaugural WIAC championship game Saturday night at Hobbs Ice Center in Eau Claire.

Despite losing to UWEC in the semifinals, UW-Stevens Point has received an invitation to the 2014 NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Championship.

On Saturday, goalie Dayn Belfour made 22 saves for the Yellowjackets, who finish with a record of 11-15-3.

Patrick Moore, Ross Andersen and Joe Krause scored goals and Jay Deo made 42 saves to preserve the shutout for the Blugolds (19-8-1).

On Sunday, the Pointers (20-5-2) received one of four at-large bids into the 11-team field and play at St. Thomas (21-4-2) for a quarterfinal matchup on Saturday.

The three Pool C bids went to Adrian, Geneseo State and  Norwich, splitting the field 7-4 between East and West.

The automatic bids for the tournament winners went to Babson, Bowdoin, Nichols, Oswego State, Salem State, St. Norbert and St. Thomas

Six teams out East will have to play Wednesday in the opening round.

The four teams in the West all got byes into Saturday’s quarterfinals. Adrian will travel to St. Norbert and UW-Stevens Point goes to St. Thomas.
