UMD sweeps UWS basketball teams

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men's and women's basketball teams lost a doubleheader to the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs Tuesday night at Romano Gym in Duluth.

The opening non-conference game saw the UMD women down the Yellowjackets 89-43, followed by the Bulldogs' 73-58 win in the men's game.

Sally Linzmeier led the Yellowjacket women with 10 points and two steals in the opening game before a Romano Gym crowd of 753.

Sophomore Taylor Meyer came off the bench to lead UMD with a game-high 19 points

UMD held a 37-19 rebounding advantage while shooting 53 percent from the field, including 9-for-21 from 3-point range.

Hannah Rutten added 13 points and seven rebounds for UMD, while junior guard Danielle Flood added eight points and six assists. Junior guard Alyssa Kerkhoff chipped in with eight points and four steals.

UWS plays next at St. Scholastica at 5:30 p.m. Monday. UMD plays at Michigan Tech at 3 p.m. Saturday.

'JACKET JOTTINGS: Both teams emptied their benches by the end of the game, with 12 players scoring for UMD and nine for UWS. ... UMD student Kinsie Stifter made a half-court shot as part of the Bulldogs' half-court heave contest to win a Verizon Windows Phone.

Men's game

Senior Bronson Byrnes scored 14 points and five rebounds in Superior's first game of the season. Freshman Tilyn Hollis added 12 points, Caleb Burch and John Denny added six points apiece and Aaron Corry and Jarrod Peterson had five each.

Peter Crawford and Kristofer Jackson had 14 points apiece to lead the Bulldogs, with Jackson also having 11 rebounds. Jackson, who tied a UMD record with six blocks earlier this year, added two blocks.

Junior Coleman (13 points), Reece Zoelle (11) and Jordan Reetz (10) also were in double figures in scoring for UMD (2-1), which held a comfortable lead for most of the night but never could put away the Yellowjackets (0-1).

UMD (2-1) shot 51.0 percent from the field compared to 28.6 for UWS, including 1 for 13 from 3-point range.

UWS plays at Augsburg College at 7 p.m. Friday and at St. Scholastica at 7 p.m. Monday.

'JACKET JOTTINGS: UMD leads the all-time series with UWS 89-44. ... The Bulldogs will play an exhibition game at UW-Green Bay Phoenix at 7 p.m. Saturday.
