Two Spartans, one Tiger win wrestling titles

Superior High School’s Nicholas Long (113 pounds) and Ross Kennelly (160) claimed individual championships at Saturday’s Spartan Wrestling Classic in the SHS gym.

Superior and Ladysmith tied for first place with 159 team points. Northwestern finished fourth with 119 points and Ashland claimed sixth with 89.

Kennelly, who was named the Classic’s Most Valuable Wrestler, improved to 23-1 on the season with four wins. He won by tech fall over Andrew Johnson (Bayfield), pinned Beau Sklyzacek (Shell Lake) and Ben Cashman (Ashland); and defeated Matt Ollinger (Ladysmith), 7-4.

Long improved to 18-4 by pinning Dawson Barber (Ladysmith) and defeating Dantae Thompson (Ashland), 8-1.

Also for the Spartans, Emanual Carson, Jack Jaques, Tyler Lehikoinen and Joey McDonald placed second and Anthony Ells and Joey Miller finished third. 

“Our entire team put together a great week of wrestling starting with Thursday’s win over Chetek,” SHS coach Chris Brochu said. “That momentum carried over to the weekend. This was a great win for Superior wrestling we are a young team and all the hard work they have put in is starting to show on the mat.”

Northwestern also had one champion with Jamison Pflug winning the 126-pound weight class. He went 5-0 on the day with pins over Payden Long (Ladysmith), Anthony Caracci (Northwood), Levi Anglin (Bayfield), Luke Irons (Proctor), and Jorge Rounwind (Ashland).

Superior hosts Bloomer/Colfax at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Superior Middle School.

Northwestern hosts Proctor Thursday and will compete, along with the Spartans, in the Ashland Invitational on Saturday.
