PRESCOTT, Wis. - Two children died and three other people were injured after a straight-truck and a sport utility vehicle collided late Thursday afternoon, Dec. 12, on Hwy. 35, along the Mississippi River about eight miles south of town.

Pierce County authorities have not yet released names of the dead -- a 12-year-old girl who died at the scene and a five-year-old girl who died later at a River Falls hospital.

One child who died was the daughter SUV driver Kari Milberg, 32, of Centuria, Wis. She and two other children in the vehicle, a three-year-old boy another five-year-old girl, were all transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

The truck was driven by Jose Mendoza, 24, of Rockford, Ill. Neither Mendoza nor his two passengers were injured.

Hwy. 35, also known as the Great River Road, remained closed for several hours between CTH E and CTH QQ as dead and injured were removed and the crash investigated.

Three medical helicopters were used along with ground ambulance units from nearby Prescott, River Falls and Ellsworth.

Pierce County Sheriff Nancy Hove said road conditions were not to blame for the crash. She said the SUV driver was the mother of two of the children and the other two kids are relatives.

Conditions on those injured were not immediately available Friday morning.
