The Northwestern/South Shore softball team is two games away from its first state tournament berth since the Tigers won it all in 1981.

The Tigers play in one Division 2 sectional semifinal game at 5 p.m. today at Mosinee.

The other semifinal game is La Crosse Logan vs. Baldwin-Woodville at West Salem. The winners will play at 5 p.m. Thursday at Medford.

Northwestern (17-3) opened the playoffs with a 7-6 win over Ashland then defeated Rice Lake 8-4.

Mosinee advanced to the sectional tournament by defeating Tomahawk 5-0 and Medford 11-1 in five innings.

Against Ashland, Lexi Jangio hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Tigers the one-run victory and a date with Rice Lake.

Trailing 6-5, Madeline Spangenberg led off the bottom of the seventh with a bunt single and promptly stole second. Samantha Clark tripled to right to score Spangenberg to tie the game and Janigo drilled a liner to the gap in left-center for the game-winner.

Abby Schultz broke a 4-4 tie with an RBI double in the sixth to give the Tigers a 5-4 lead.

Hailey Eller hit a two-run home run to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead in the second inning.

Cheyenne Johnson picked up the win with eight strikeouts and one walk. Spangenberg led the Tigers by going 4-for-4 with two doubles and Clark went 2-for-3.

Mosinee (23-2) won the Great Northern Conference with a 10-2 record.
