The Northwestern Tigers softball team remained undefeated in the Heart O’ North Conference with a pair of wins earlier this week.

The Tigers defeated previously undefeated Bloomer 1-0 on Tuesday then beat Chetek 19-1 in five innings in a make-up game Wednesday.

Against Bloomer, Lexi Janigo walked to lead off the third inning and eventually scored from second base on an error.

The Tigers had four hits, one each by Maddie Spangenberg, Laryssa Vik, Cheyenne Johnson and freshman Brooklyn Osweskey.

Johnson was also the winning pitcher with her fifth shutout of the season. She allowed four hits with four strikeouts.

The Blackhawks threatened in the seventh inning by putting runners on second and third with two outs. But the Tigers got out of the jam and sealed the victory when a Bloomer runner was tagged out at the plate trying to score on a passed ball.

“The girls (catcher Janigo and pitcher Johnson) pulled off a textbook play,” NHS coach Scott Janigo said. “We started working on that play on the first day of practice and it really paid off for us.”

Northwestern had plenty of scoring chances with Bloomer pitchers walking 11 batters.

“We had bases loaded three times, but struggled getting the key hits when we could have used them,” Coach Janigo said.

The Tigers didn’t have any problems scoring in Chetek as every batter in the lineup recorded a hit in the five-inning game.

Spangenberg hit her fourth home run of the year to go with a double, single and five runs scored. Samantha Clark was also 4-for-4 with three RBIs and five runs scored; Janigo was 5-for-5 with a triple, double and eight RBIs; and Johnson, Karaline Green, Vik and Osweskey had two hits apiece.

The Tigers, who hosted Cumberland for a doubleheader Thursday, host Duluth East for two games at 10 a.m. Saturday.

TIGER TALES: Northwestern wraps up the regular season with games at Bloomer Monday and Hayward Tuesday. Both games begin at 4:30 p.m. … The Tigers were awarded the No. 1 seed for the playoffs and will host the winner of the Ashland-Spooner game on Tuesday, May 27.
