The roller skating rink on Oakes Avenue recently joined kidsskatefree.com, a free program where kidsskatefree.com sends families passes to their local roller skating center each week.

According to the American Heart Association, about one in three American kids and teens today are overweight or obese. This has nearly tripled the rate from 50 years ago. Short of the mere physical effects of being overweight, obesity is also causing a broad range of health and psychological problems including but not limited to high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, low self-esteem, negative body image and depression.

Roller skating centers across the nation offer kids a fun and rewarding way to stay active. Studies show that roller skating provides a complete aerobic workout and involves all the body’s muscles, especially the heart. Just one hour of skating burns between 400 and 600 calories.

The free program is simple. All a parent needs to do is visit the kidsskatefree.com website, select a skating center near you and register with an email address to start receiving two free skating passes per week per child by email.

What is really great is that this is a year round program not just a summer promotion, said Steve Grapentin, owner of the World of Wheels.

“We jumped on the opportunity to be part of this great program two years ago.” Grapentin said. “We can appreciate how tough it is in this economy and are thrilled to be able to offer families an affordable form of entertainment while also providing an exciting physical activity for our kids.”
