Superior man sentenced for groping UWS students
A Superior man will spend 135 days in jail for biking up to female pedestrians and groping them on the University of Wisconsin-Superior campus in October.
John Frank Young, 29, pleaded guilty Monday in Douglas County Circuit Court to two counts of fourth-degree sex assault. He was sentenced to two years of probation and 135 days jail with Huber release granted for treatment and work. Young was ordered to undergo sex offender and chemical dependency evaluations and have no contact with the victims or the UWS and Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College campuses.
Young also pleaded guilty to a felony charge of stalking. A deferred judgment of conviction agreement was entered. If Young complies with his probation and bail terms for three years, the state will move to dismiss the charge.
According to the criminal complaint:
Young bicycled by female pedestrians at UWS and touched their buttocks. He followed one of the victims around several times over the course of a month, often while riding a mountain bike. He would ride up behind her, staying very close or circling around her. She told police he also stared at her home, took a photo or video of her and slapped her buttocks.
Another female said she was at a crosswalk along Catlin Avenue when Young rode up to her, reached out and touched her buttocks, said “nice” and rode away.
The Superior man was convicted of fourth-degree sex assault for a similar incident in April 2012 along Superior’s Osaugie Trail.
