Superior girls run away from D.C. Everest

The Superior High School girls arguably played their best game of the season Friday night with a 69-46 win over the D.C. Everest Evergreens in the opening round of the Big Rivers Conference-Wisconsin Valley Conference Challenge in the SHS gym.

The Spartans dominated from the start, including taking a 24-11 lead after one quarter of play.

Hailey Kontny led the Spartans with 20 points, including 17 in the first half. Alyssa Correll was next with 20 points, which included three 3-point baskets. Jessica Lindstrom was limited to 13 points, but she dished out a half dozen assists and blocked at least three shots.

DCE’s 6-foot-3 junior Taylor Hodell scored a team-high 12 points. Only five of her points came in the first half. Her remaining seven points came in the third quarter, including five when Lindstrom went to the Spartan bench with three personal fouls.

The Evergreens also got eight points from Hanna Tipple and two 3-pointers from Haley Kroll.

In other action Friday, Eau Claire Memorial defeated Wausau East 68-24, Chippewa Falls downed Wausau West 63-50, and Wisconsin Rapids won 49-42 over Rice Lake.

Superior, now 5-1 on the season, plays Wausau West at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The Evergreens, who suffered their first loss of the season, play Eau Claire Memorial at 4 p.m. Saturday.
