Superior Central made it to the state high school basketball tournament with a 76-60 win over Cumberland in the Spooner Sectional championship game. Bill Venne tossed in 21 points to lead the attack as the late-developing Vikings won their fifth straight postseason tournament game to improve to 11-11. The Vikings dominated the boards with the rebounding efforts of Venne, Don Kruger, John Zwakman and Larry Schuman. Setting the pace for Cumberland were Ron Coleman with 14 points and Val Barrows with 11 points. (1957)

The Bobby Nichols rink of Superior, which included Bill Strum, Tom Locken and Bob Christman, drubbed Connecticut 9-1 to capture the U.S. National Curling Championships in Utica, N.Y. The rink dedicated the nationals to Bud Somerville, who didn’t compete because of health reasons. (1978)
