Spartans go 3-0 in Notre Dame tournament
The Superior High School boys hockey team went 3-0 in the Green Bay Notre Dame Showdown in Titletown over the weekend.
The Spartans began the event with a 3-2 overtime win at Wausau West. The then moved to the Cornerstone Community Center in Ashwaubenon where they defeated the Stevens Point Panthers 4-1 Saturday night and then blanked the Marquette Hilltoppers 3-0 Sunday afternoon.
Peyton Flanders picked up the shutout on Sunday with six saves.
Offensively, the Spartans got goals from Mark Shold, Daniel Mikel, on a second-period breakaway, and Aaron Miller.
The Spartans dominated the Hilltoppers, not allowing a shot on goal in the first period and at one point in the second period owned an 18-1 shot advantage.
Against Stevens Point, Miller scored three goals, Mikel scored once and Paxton Paine stopped 16 shots.
Tyler Nystrom’s goal with 50 seconds left in overtime gave Superior a 3-2 win over the Wausau West Warriors Friday night.
Miller and Mikel also scored for the Spartans and Paine picked up the win in goal for Superior with 22 saves.
