The Superior High School football team opened the 2014 season with a 37-14 loss to the Hopkins Royals Friday night at Hopkins Stadium.

After completing 10-of-19 passes in the first half, Spartan quarterback Nick Mehlum finished the game 14-of-29 for 186 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was also sacked five times.

Jake Libal caught six passes for 94 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown with 1:06 left in the second quarter.

Superior had 253 total yards, including 67 yards rushing. Hopkins had 448 total yards, including 246 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 46 attempts.

The Royals moved the ball deep into Superior territory on the first drive of the game but failed to score when Superior’s Deshon Pleau intercepted an Oscar Johnson pass at the 5-yard line.

Superior moved the ball 10 yards before punting the ball back to Hopkins and on the Royals’ first play they took a 14-0 lead when Johnson threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Tajuan Winston.

It went to 14-0 on Harry Momah’s 4-yard run with 7:57 left in the second quarter.

The Royals seemed on their way to adding to their lead, but Superior’s Matt Hinaus recovered a fumble at the 5-yard line with 2:56 left in the half.

The Spartans then put together a 95-yard drive that ended with Mehlum’s touchdown pass to Libal. McKenzie Schwarz kicked the extra point to make the score 14-7 at the half.

A key play on the scoring drive was a 32-yard pass from Mehlum to Ross Kennelly.

Superior misplayed a snap on the first play of the second half and minutes later Hopkins took a 20-7 lead on Momah’s 3-yard run.

Zach Savitz’s 33-yard field goal made it 23-7 with two minutes left in the third quarter.

After three plays and a 56-yard punt by Schwarz, Hopkins took a 30-7 lead when D’Tavius Williams broke a number of tackles on a 44-yard touchdown run up the middle.

The Spartans came back on the next drive and made the 30-14 when Mehlum tossed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Mitch Anderson and Schwarz booted the extra point.

Hopkins completed the scoring with JaMichael Ellis’ 30-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Grant Hansen led Superior on the ground with 37 yards on two carries. Schwarz also caught four passes for 29 yards and Kennelly and Jesse Polson led the Spartans on defense with 13 and eight tackles, respectively.

For Hopkins, Johnson was 12-of-26 passing for 192 yards, Wintson caught five passes for 104 yards and DT Williams rushed for 117 yards.

The Spartans will play their first game on Spartan Field at the new National Bank of Commerce Sports Complex when they host Merrill at 7 p.m. Friday.

Tickets will be presold from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to noon on Friday in the SHS office.
