Spartan wrestlers lose season opener
The Superior High School wrestling team opened its season with a 66-15 loss to the Cumberland Beavers Tuesday night in Cumberland.
The Spartans, who return 10 wrestlers from last year's squad, had three victories on the night.
Sophomore captain Ross Kennelly pinned Cumberland's Ben Gilbert in 15 seconds; Nick Long overcame a five-point deficit to win 9-6 over Cumberland's Drew Rihn; and Emanuel Carson won by forfeit at 145 pounds.
"Cumberland is the defending conference champ and they won the match, but the score didn't show how close it really was," SHS coach Chris Brochu said. "We had a number of wrestlers in close matches, and some were even leading late into the third period before being turned and pinned."
One of those matches was at 138 pounds where Jake Jaques lost to returning state qualifier Trey Lundequam.
"That match was back-and-forth until late in the third when Lundequam was able to pin Jake," Brochu said. "Anthony Ells also wrestled well at 170 before being pinned with 22 seconds left, and Billy Regner was leading his 182-pound match before getting pinned with 13 seconds left."
The Spartans host Ladysmith at 7 p.m. Thursday and will compete in the Eau Claire North Invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday.
