Spartan softball team goes 3-1
The Superior High School softball team took a page out of Ernie Banks’ and the Chicago Cubs playbook — if it’s nice out, play two.
With temperatures hovering near 70, the Spartans went a step further and actually played four games on Saturday.
Superior began the day going 1-1 at the Bloomer Tournament, defeating New Richmond 12-8 and losing to Baldwin-Woodville 1-0. The Spartans then made their way to Rice Lake, where they swept the Warriors by scores of 8-1 and 4-3.
Against New Richmond (5-4), the Spartans trailed 3-1 until scoring eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Superior had 13 hits led by Tailor Schuster, who was 3-for-4, with a triple and three RBIs. Harmony Clarke added two hits and scored three runs; Katie Heinen doubled and singled; Gabby Gidley singled twice and knocked in a run; Jessica Lindstrom doubled home two runs; Ari Jago doubled home a run; and Rachal Fregin and Mackenzie Kmecik singled.
Heinen, Shannon Johnstad and Brandi Goldberg pitched for Superior, allowing 11 hits with four strikeouts and eight walks.
Baldwin-Woodville (12-0) scored the only run it needed on Phelps’ home run in the second inning.
Superior had three hits, a double by Lindstrom and singles by Taylor Nelson and Fregin.
Goldberg suffered the loss after allowing just four hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.
Abby Klopp, the winning pitcher, finished with nine strikeouts for the Blackhawks.
Schuster singled home Clarke with the winning run in the top of the eighth inning in a 4-3 win over Rice Lake.
Superior scored single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings. All three Rice Lake runs came in the bottom of the sixth.
Heinen doubled twice and knocked in a run to lead the Spartans at the plate. Jago added two hits; Gildey doubled; Fregin and Kmecik had RBI singles; and Clarke and Schuster singled.
Goldberg picked up the complete-game win, allowing three hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.
In the second game at Rice Lake, Superior scored six runs in the second inning and two more in the fifth. Rice Lake’s run came in the fifth inning.
Schuster led the Spartans with a double, two singles and two RBIs. Heinen added a double, single and two RBIs; Clark and Nelson doubled; Lindstrom, Gidley and Fregin singled and had an RBI each; and Jago and Kmecik singled.
Goldberg picked up the win, allowing an unearned run with three strikeouts.
The Spartans play Duluth Denfeld at 4 today at Ordean Middle School, play a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Thursday at Eau Claire North; host Proctor at 4:30 p.m. Friday; and host Eau Claire Memorial for a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday.
SPARTAN SPIN: Baldwin-Woodville is 12-0 on the season and ranked No. 2 among the state’s Division 2 teams. The Blackhawks have only allowed five runs this season.
