The Superior High School boys basketball team snapped an 11-game losing streak with a 54-43 win over the Amery Warriors Friday night in the SHS gym.

Superior’s last win was over Duluth Marshall on Dec. 19.

Carter Anderson led the Spartans (4-12) with a game-high 26 points, which included five 3-point baskets.

Two of Anderson’s 3-pointers, along with two free throws, came in the final minute of the second quarter and helped turn a one-point lead into a 31-23 advantage for Superior at halftime.

Amery outscored Superior 13-8 in the third quarter, then tied the game for the first time at 39-39 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.

The game was tied again at 41-41 with 5:06 remaining, but the Spartans regained a 45-41 lead on back-to-back baskets by Nate Sanders.

A three-point play and then two free throws by Anderson allowed Superior to open up a 50-41 lead.

The rest of game was played at the free-throw line.

Amery (3-9) was led by Mike Elbing’s 13 points.

The Spartans play at Duluth East at 7:45 p.m. today, host Grand Rapids Thursday and Eau Claire North Saturday. The home games begin at 7:15 p.m.

SPARTAN SPIN: Superior was 14-of-15 from the free-throw line and Amery was 11-of-14. … Honored on Senior Night for the Spartans were Anderson, Jon Lindberg, Matthew O’Shaughnessy and Will Stream. Also honored were seniors on the dance and cheerleading teams. … Brandon Myer’s basket with 10 seconds remaining gave the SHS junior varsity a 50-49 victory. Myer finished with 15 points. Shaun Petrovich added 10 points.

SHS boys come up short

Superior’s losing streak reached 11 games with a 49-40 loss Thursday night at Menomonie.

The Spartans led 17-11 after the first quarter, but then were outscored 9-2 in the second quarter and trailed 20-19 at the half.

The Mustangs took a one-point lead after three quarters, then outscored the Spartans 15-8 in the fourth quarter.

Jake Libal led Superior with a game-high 16 points, nine of which came on a trio of 3-pointers. Hayden Swartz led Menomonie with 12 points.
