Spartan hockey team gets No. 4 seed
The Superior High School boys hockey team was given the No. 4 seed for the upcoming WIAA playoffs and will host No. 5 Menomonie at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20.
Hudson was awarded the No. 1 seed and will host the winner of No. 9 Spooner and No. 8 Baldwin-Woodville, which will be played on Feb. 18. That winner will play the winner of the Superior-Menomonie game on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
The sectional championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on March 1 in Amery.
The Spartans were not awarded the No. 1 seed for just the fourth time since the seeding process began in the 1990s. Superior was the No 2 seed in 2006 and 2001 and the No. 4 seed in 1999.
Out of those three seasons, Superior only advanced to state in 2006 thanks to a 3-2 triple overtime win over New Richmond. The Spartans then lost to Fond du Lac 3-2 in double overtime in the state tournament quarterfinals.
In 1999 Superior lost to Spooner in the playoff opener; and in 2001 lost to Hudson in the sectional championship game.
Superior (11-11) wraps up its regular season by playing at Hermantown Tuesday and hosting Duluth East Thursday. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday’s game will be carried live on the radio and the web at WNXR 107.3 FM and on My 9 television.
