Spartan girls finish regular season with 19-3 record
The Superior High School girls basketball team wrapped up its regular season with a 72-54 win over Grand Rapids Thursday night in the SHS gym.
Jessica Lindstrom, Hailey Kontny and Alyssa Cornell combined for 67 points as the Spartans finish the season with a record of 19-3.
Superior is the No. 1 seed in the upcoming WIAA playoffs and will host No. 8 Hudson at 7 p.m. Friday. If the Spartans win they will host the No. 5 Eau Claire Memorial-No. 4 Marshfield winner at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Other regional games Friday are No. 6 Wausau West at No. 3 D.C. Everest and No. 7 Eau Claire North at No. 2 Chippewa Falls.
The sectional seminal is March 13 at Eau Claire Memorial and the sectional final is March 15 at Stevens Point.
The Spartans honored their six seniors prior to Thursday’s game, including Lindstrom, Kontny, Missy Toland, Rachal Fregin, Taylor Phillips and Taylor Nelson.
“I’m really proud of my six seniors, they are not only good basketball players but amazing young leaders on and off the court,” SHS coach Phil Roe said. “Many of them have 3.7 to 3.9 GPAs are involved in many leadership roles in their classes, clubs, and community.
“It’s tough to balance AP classes, leadership opportunities, and multiple sports but these ladies have done so with honor and grace and have set a top example to their younger teammates.”
With an all-senior line-up staring the game, the Spartans took a 15-10 first-quarter lead and never looked back.
“I felt all the girls played some tough backcourt defense and moved the ball well in transition,” Roe said. “We are now getting ready for our new playoff season and getting ready for Hudson next Friday.”
SPARTAN SPIN: Superior is ranked No. 5 among Division 1 teams in Wisconsin. In the same poll, Chippewa Falls is No. 8 and DCE is No. 10.
