Spartan girls fall in OT at Chisago Lakes
In a battle of unbeaten teams, the Chisago Lakes Wildcats remained perfect with an 83-77 overtime victory against the Superior High School girls basketball team Tuesday night in Chisago Lakes.
Bryanna Fernstrom, a 6-foot-5 Iowa State recruit, scored five of her game-high 38 points in overtime to lead the Wildcats, who now hold a 5-0 record and are ranked No. 5 among Minnesota’s AAA teams.
The Spartans (3-1) entered the game ranked No. 2 in Division 1 in Wisconsin.
“My team learned a lot of lessons through this game, and there is no doubt we will get better as team playing such a high quality opponent on the road,” said Phil Roe, SHS head coach. “It was a tough loss and it stings for all of us, but we will learn, reflect and get better as team.”
Dani Berg had 17 points for the Wildcats, including a 3-pointer with about seven seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Chisago Lakes then outscored Superior 8-2 in the extra session.
The Spartans trailed by 12 points in the second half before rallying to force overtime.
Hailey Kontny led Superior with 28 points. Jessica Lindstrom added 17 points before fouling out; Alyssa Correll chipped in with 16 points; and Tailor Schuster had 11.
Twelve of Correll’s points came on 3-point baskets.
The Wildcats, who led 40-30 at the half, made nine 3-pointers, including five by Berg.
“I was proud of my girls; they battled through a tough environment and situation and came back with a lot of energy and resiliency in the second half,” Roe said. “We scored 77 points against a very good zone team, but we had a tough time containing … Bryanna Fernstrom.”
The Spartans host Chippewa Falls at 7:15 p.m. Friday. The Cardinals defeated Eau Claire Memorial 46-32 on Friday to improve to 3-1. The only blemish on their record is a 52-47 loss at New Richmond.
Courtney Passint and Kayla Hanley lead Chippewa Falls in scoring with 9.5 and 8.2 points a game, respectively.

MaryLynne Leadstrom had a career-high 17 points, and Natalie Olson made her first five shots of the game — including two 3-pointers — to finish with 18 points.
