Spartan girls and boys lose at Rice Lake

The Superior High School basketball teams were swept at Rice Lake Tuesday night.

The Spartan girls opened with a 66-62 loss, and the Warriors completed the sweep with an 88-62 win in the boys game.

Girls Game

The Spartans lost to a Wisconsin opponent for the first time this season with their four-point loss to the Warriors, who improve to 9-11 on the season.

Superior led 21-16 after the first quarter, but then was outscored 30-19 over the next two quarters. The Spartans had a 22-20 advantage in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to 16-3 on the season.

Superior’s other two losses were to Chisago Lakes and Eden Prairie, both of Minnesota.

Jessica Lindstrom led Superior with 26 points. Hailey Kontny added 10 points and McKenzkie Kmecik had nine.

The Spartans also got six points from Rachal Fregin, five from Alyssa Correll, four from Tailor Schuster, and two from Malley O’Brien.

Superior hosts Duluth Denfeld Friday and Duluth Marshall Tuesday. Both games begin at 7:15 p.m.

Rice Lake hosts Eau Claire Memorial Friday and plays at Chippewa Falls on Feb. 27

Boys Game

Henry Ellenson, a 6-foot-9 junior, led the Rice Lake boys with 46 points. Bed Widdes was also in double figures with 15 points.

Twenty-one of Ellenson’s points came on seven 3-point baskets.

Jon Lindberg led Superior with 16 points. Matt O’Shaughnessy added 14 points, and Jake Libal had 13.

The Spartans wrap up their regular season when they host Duluth Denfeld at 5:45 p.m. Friday.

Superior’s first WIAA tournament game is at Marshfield on Feb. 28.

Rice Lake is 17-2 on the year with losses to Tartan (Minn.) and Neenah. The Warriors play at Eau Claire Memorial on Friday.
