Songs of Nordic days gone by
Arna Rennan will present a program on “Music of the Immigrants” at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Carlton County Historical Society museum in Cloquet.
Arna’s lifelong interest in Norwegian folk music began with first learning from her mother and later studying at the Institute of Folk Culture in Rauland, Telemark. While there, she gained an understanding of the ancient roots of traditional singing based on the overtone flute. Arna creates an atmosphere of Nordic culture around her — be it in her log home in Normanna Township, Scandinavian cuisine, storytelling, painting, playing ancient instruments, singing or performing with her ensemble Nordic Angst.
Arna’s program at the museum includes a variety of immigrant songs and songs written and sung in Norway. Her program complements the museum’s exhibit, “New Land, New Life! Norwegian Immigration in Minnesota: 1825-1925”, sponsored by the Cloquet Sons of Norway Lodge.
After the program enjoy Norwegian refreshments provided by the sponsors.
Regular admission is $2 for adults, $1 for children under 12 and no charge for children under 5 or CCHS members. Call 218-879-1938.
