Solon Springs woman killed in car crash

Josephine “Jo” Stewart of Solon Springs, a former Northwestern High School English teacher and founding member of both the St. Croix Writers and Laughing Club, was killed in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon on US Highway 53 by the Solon Springs Airport.

Stewart, 85, was driving west across the northbound lanes of Highway 53 and collided with a northbound vehicle driven by a 58-year-old Superior man, according to a release from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department. Stewart was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other driver reported no injuries. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.
