SHS softball team improves to 3-0 with 14-8 win over Northwestern
The Spartans opened their season with a doubleheader sweep at Menomonie on Tuesday while the Tigers were seeing action for the first time.
The Tigers outhit the Spartans 13-11, but two of Superior’s hits were three-run home runs by Katie Heinen and Taylor Nelson.
Nelson also doubled; Tailor Schuster had two hits and scored twice; Ari Jago singled three times and scored three runs; and Rachel Fregin, Harmony Clark, Britta Bergstrom, Allie Thul and MacKenzie Kmecik had a single apiece.
For Northwestern, Maddie Spangenberg hit a home run, singled and scored three runs; Lexi Janigo had three hits and an RBI; Green doubled and singled; Cheyanne Johnson singled twice; Samantha Clark doubled, singled and had on RBI; Klobluchar hit a two-run double; and Laryssa Vik and Aliex Friend both singled.
Brandi Goldberg improved to 3-0 with the complete-game victory with four strikeouts and four walks.
Johnson suffered the loss, allowing nine earned runs with five strikeouts and seven walks.
Nelson’s three-run home run came in Superior’s six-run first inning. The other three runs came on a passed ball, Fregin’s sac bunt and Kmecik’s RBI single.
The Tigers got three runs back in the bottom of the first on Friend’s RBI double and Green’s two-run double.
Superior added three runs in the second and inning and another in the third before Heinen belted a three-run home run in the fifth inning.
Vik hit an RBI single in the fourth inning. Then in the fifth, Green singled, Johnson doubled and Eller walked. Klobucher followed with a two-run single, moved to third on Spangenberg’s double and scored on Clark’s single. Spangenberg then scored on a single by Janigo.
The Tigers’ final run was a home run by Spangenberg in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Spartans host Esko Tuesday and Duluth East Friday. Both games are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the Superior Middle School.
Northwestern hosts Barron Tuesday in Brule and play at Grantsburg on Thursday. Both games are scheduled for 5 p.m.
