SHS softball team falls in 13 innings
The road to winning a Lake Superior Conference title got a lot tougher for the Superior High School softball team with a 4-3 13-inning loss to Duluth Denfeld Tuesday evening at Ordean Middle School.
The game was scheduled to be played in Superior, but the Superior Middle School field was unplayable and the game was moved to Duluth.
The pitchers for both teams went the distance with Ashley Taipale picking up the win for the Hunters, allowing seven hits with seven strikeouts and five walks.
Brandie Goldberg suffered the loss for the Spartans, allowing eight hits with 20 strikeouts and seven walks. Three of Denfeld’s runs were earned.
Denfeld took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. Two walks and a sacrifice were followed by Taipale’s two-run hit.
Superior took a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning.
Katie Heinen and Gabby Gidley drew two-out walks and scored on Taylor Nelson’s double. Nelson then scored on Harmony Clarke’s triple.
Denfeld tied it up in the seventh inning when Alexa Klaas led off with a single, moved to third on a passed ball then scored on Cierra Taipale’s two-out single.
After five scoreless innings, Denfeld’s Klaas led off the 13th inning with a double, moved to third on a fly out and then scored on Ashley Taipale’s single to center.
The Spartans had seven hits, led by Nelson with a double, single and two RBIs. Along with Clarke’s run-scoring triple, Superior got a double, single and two walks from Mackenzie Kmecik; a double from Ari Jago; and a single and two walks from Gidley.
Ashley Taipale led the Hunters with two hits and three RBIs.
The Spartans (11-5 overall, 3-1 LSC) will play a doubleheader at Eau Claire North at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Superior will then host Proctor at 4 p.m. Friday, Eau Claire Memorial for a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday and Ashland for a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
NOTE: Following Friday’s game with Proctor, the Rails and Ashland will play at 6 p.m.
