SHS hockey team takes out frustration on Mustangs

The Superior High School boys hockey team lost to the Chippewa Falls Cardinals for the first time ever Thursday night at the Chippewa Area Ice Arena.

Two days later the Spartans took it out on the Menomonie Mustangs with a 10-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Wessman Arena.

Superior got huge games on Saturday from Tyler Nystrom, three goals and four assists; Anthony Bronson, three goals and an assist; and Aaron Miller, two goals and five assists. Miller missed the Chippewa Falls game because of a hand injury suffered during Tuesday’s win over Rice Lake.

Daniel Mikel also had a goal and two assists, Beau Reder dished out two assists and Jesse Polson scored his first goal of the season.

Paxton Paine picked up the shutout with 15 saves. Colin Strong had 16 saves and John Talberg had six for Menomonie.

The Spartans went into Thursday’s game leading the all-time series with Chippewa Falls 11-0. The Cardinals snapped that streak with an 8-4 victory.

Chippewa Falls jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Reder then scored the first of his two goals for Superior, but the Cardinals answered for a 4-1 game after the first period.

The Spartans also got a goal from Mikel, and Peyton Flanders had nine saves in the first period before being relieved by Paine, who stopped 18 shots in the second and third periods.

Jordan Steimetz led Chippewa Falls with two goals and an assist. Danny Toycen added a pair of goals and Chase Stoffel, Austin Jordan, Tyler Anderson and Bailey Decker had a goal each.

Sean Dubiel had 20 saves in goal for the Cardinals.

The Spartans play at Duluth Denfeld at 7:15 p.m. Thursday then host River Falls at 5 p.m. Saturday.
