SHS girls win third-place game in Madison

Peterson also scored the Spartans’ first two goals as the Spartans improved to 4-6 on the season.

Ari Jago also scored for Superior and assisted on Peterson’s game-winning goal. Samantha Young also had two assists and Paige Harker picked up one assist.

Justine Stenberg was the winning goaltender with 22 saves, including 15 in the second period. Jenna Paez had 29 saves for the Eagles.

 “The team played with big hearts and a never-say-die attitude,” SHS coach Ernie Harker said. “Our coaching staff couldn't be more proud of their accomplishment this weekend.

“We also finished Sunday’s game with only nine players on the bench. We lost two more players with injuries, but we just didn’t quit.”

The Spartans snapped a five-game losing skid with a 3-2 win over the Middleton Metro Lynx Friday night, but then lost to University School of Milwaukee 7-1 on Saturday.

Amanda Hinaus scored Superior’s lone goal against USM and Stenberg finished with 25 saves.

After a scoreless first period on Friday, Devyn Moss gave Superior a 1-0 lead 4:15 into the second period with an assist from Ari Jago.

The Spartans took a 2-1 lead 30 seconds into the third period on Peterson’s goal then took a 3-1 lead when Young scored with assists from Peterson and Jordan Thompson at 7:07.

The Lynx made things interesting when Jordann Herrling scored with 3:04 remaining then pulled their goal for an extra attacker.

Superior held on for the win with the help of goaltender Stenberg, who finished with 28 saves, including 15 in the third period.

The Spartans play at New Richmond at 6:30 p.m. Thursday then host Cloquet at 8 p.m. Monday.

SPARTAN SPIN: There were 13 penalties called, including seven on Superior. … USM (10-1-1) defeated the St. Croix Valley Fusion 4-3 in the championship game. … USM was ranked No. 4 in the latest wisconsinprephockey.net poll, Northland Pines (8-2) was No. 6 and Middleton (7-4-1) was ranked No. 6.
