SHS girls win at New Richmond

The Superior High School girls hockey team won its second straight game, and third in past four games, with a 9-4 win over the Western Wisconsin Stars Thursday night in New Richmond.

The Spartans got three goals from Emma Peterson and two apiece from Jordyn Thompson, Devyn Moss and Ari Jago to improve to 5-6 on the season.

Superior also got 13 assists from Justine Stenberg. Tina Montpetit and Alice Gramenz combined to make 19 saves for the Stars.

Western Wisconsin (4-7) got two goals from Kaylin Gamache and a goal apiece from Ashley Dusek and Bailey Erickson.

The Spartans led 2-0 after one period on goals from Thompson and Peterson.

After the Stars 2:22 into the second period, Superior opened up a 5-1 lead thanks to goals from Moss, Jago and Thompson.

Western Wisconsin rallied with three goals in the final 2:06 of the second period, but again the Spartans responded and dominated the third period with two goals from Peterson and a goal apiece from Moss and Jago.

The Spartans host Cloquet-Esko-Carlton at 8 p.m. Monday and the WSFLG Blizzard at 7 p.m. Thursday.

SPARTAN SPIN: Thursday’s game was originally scheduled to be played on Dec. 5, but was postponed because of snow. … The Spartans and Stars play again Feb. 15 in Superior. … According to wisconsinprephockey.net, Peterson leads the Spartans in scoring with 17 goals and eight assists for 25 points. Moss is next with six goals, Thompson has five goals and Samantha Young and Jago have four goals apiece.
