SHS baseball team loses at New Richmond
The Superior High School baseball team lost 16-4 at New Richmond Saturday afternoon.
Highlights for the Spartans were Sean O’Neill going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and RBI singles by Taavi Mattson and Nate Kunkel.
Superior also got a double and single from Will Mullens, two hits from Mattson and a hit apiece from Austin Sears and Logan Griffith.
Hayden Nelson picked up the win for the Tigers allowing nine hits with five strikeouts.
Mattson suffered the loss for Superior, allowing two runs with three walks and one strikeout in just one inning.
Cole Peterson, Cameron Hausman, Austin Juhl and Josh Kizer combined for seven hits and 10 RBIs for New Richmond.
Superior took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when O’Neill doubled and scored a Mattson single.
New Richmond scored twice in the bottom of the first thanks to Jeremy Leaven’s double.
The Tigers blew the game open with nine runs in the bottom of the second inning then added two runs in the third inning and three runs in the fourth.
Superior scored twice in the top of third thanks to an error and Kunkel’s RBI hit.
The Spartans’ final run in the fifth inning came in on an error.
Superior plays again at Proctor at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
SPARTAN SPIN: The SHS JV defeated New Richmond’s JV 12-6. Matt Strum started and pitched three innings allowing six runs (three earned) on four hits. Tyler Lehikoinen pitched four scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win. He allowed two hits while striking out two and walking four. The Spartans had nine hits with Lehikoinen and Josh Tomczak getting two hits apiece and Alex Kaske, Strum, Keith Montgomery, Brett Austin and CJ Fortune each getting one hit. The Spartan JV is 2-3-1 on the season.
