Sailing season kicks off with boat auction, presentation
The Duluth Superior Sailing Association is holding two events this weekend to kick off the boating season.
The DSSA boat auction and gear swap will be held in the big storage building at Barker's Island Marina Saturday at 9 a.m.
Bring in boats and gear to sell and keep 90 percent of the proceeds of the sale. A 10 percent donation will be given to the DSSA. For a list of gear for sale, go to www.dssaboatauction.com.
At 5 p.m. Saturday, world-class sailor Roger B. Swanson and his wife, Gaynelle Templin, will give a presentation on their 2007 epic voyage through perilous Arctic waters on their 57-foot sailboat, "Cloud Nine." The event will be held at Katherine Ohman Hall on the University of Wisconsin-Superior campus.
Swanson has sailed 215,000 nautical miles, nearly all aboard "Cloud Nine," and has completed three world circumnavigations. He has completed two trips to Antarctica, the second crossing the Antarctic Circle. He has sailed to the Arctic three times, and
all three were Northwest Passage attempts, but the first two were stopped by ice. The third was successful in 2007.
He and Templin were married in 1996 and she has sailed with him on all passages since then, accumulating about 80,000 nautical miles.
This included the third circumnavigation and the last two trips to the Arctic.
Cost of the presentation is a donation of $3 or $5 per couple.
