A plan to close Lake Shore Road to reduce access to Schafer Beach won’t be implemented until next year.

In 2015, the road closes April 15 and remains closed through June 15, 2015, unless there is evidence piping plover is nesting on the beach. If nesting activity is found, the road remains closed through Aug. 15.

The goal behind the closure is to restore nesting pairs of piping plover to the Twin Ports.

Schafer Beach is an ideal location for the project, according to Kris Eilers of the St. Louis River Alliance.

The critically endangered shore bird hasn’t nested in the Twin Ports since the 1980s. There are fewer than 70 pairs in the Great Lakes region and only about seven pairs in Wisconsin.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Wisconsin Point Planning Committee, city of Superior, Douglas County, Fond du Lac Band, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and St. Louis River Alliance are working together on the project.
