Wally Ellenson, an All-America high jumper for the University of Minnesota and former member of the men’s basketball team, is transferring to Marquette to compete in basketball and track and field, the school said in a statement Wednesday.
Ellenson will have two seasons of eligibility remaining after redshirting in 2014-15 due to NCAA transfer rules.
“We are thrilled to welcome Wally to the Marquette men’s basketball family,” Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski said. “Wally is a young man of outstanding character. He is an elite-level athlete and adds talent, athleticism, and competitive spirit to our basketball team. We are extremely excited about the impact he will have at Marquette.”
Ellenson appeared in 18 games for the Gophers over two seasons before leaving the team in February to concentrate on track and field.
He was the runner-up in the high jump in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in June with a jump of 7 feet, 4¼ inches, the second-highest outdoor mark in Gophers history.
The 6-foot-6 forward averaged 1.8 points over nine games as a sophomore and 2.0 points over nine games as a freshman.
Ellenson’s younger brother, Henry, will be a senior at Rice Lake (Wis.) High School. The 6-10 forward is one of the nation’s most sought-after recruits, with scholarship offers from Marquette, Wisconsin, Duke, Kansas and North Carolina.
