Reds go 2-1 in Virginia tournament
The Superior Reds American Legion baseball team went 2-1 recently in the Land of the Loon Tournament, hosted by Virginia, Minn. For the season, the Reds hold a 3-2 record.
The Reds opened play with a 7-1 loss to International Falls but then defeated Proctor 9-3 and West Duluth 11-1 to claim the consolation championship.
In the loss Friday to International Falls, the Reds fell behind early. International Falls scored two runs in the first, third and fourth innings before Superior managed its first and only run in the fifth. International Falls then added another run in the sixth inning for the final 7-1 margin.
Taavi Mattson, Tyler Nystrom and Austin Arnovich each collected hits for the Reds. Mattson was saddled with the pitching loss.
In game two, played Saturday, Arnovich picked up the win on the mound in 4 1/3 innings of work. Nate Kunkel came on in relief.
Will Mullens led the Reds at the plate in their 9-3 win over Proctor. He went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI and scored two runs. Trent Olson also crossed the plate twice as he went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and Sean O’Neill was 2-for-4 with one run scored.
Also adding one hit and one RBI apiece were Dane Sislo, Andy Glonek and Arnovich.
Superior raced out to a 8-0 lead in Sunday’s consolation championship en route to its 11-1 victory over the West Duluth Cubs.
Sislo earned the pitching win with Morgen Moen pitching in relief.
The Reds scored four runs in the first inning; two in the second, fourth and sixth innings; and one in the seventh inning. The Cubs scored in the fifth inning.
Logan Griffith had a big game at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. Matt Hinaus went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, while Tyler Nystrom went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Glonek scored three runs behind a two-hit performance; Brandon Moe and Will Mullens each had a hit and an RBI; and Olson had a hit and a run scored.
The Reds are back in action today with a doubleheader against the West Duluth Cubs. The first game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
The Reds then travel to Virginia for a 5:30 p.m. game Wednesday.
