'Radio Superior' reflects on local reaction to victory in Europe
Churches opened their doors while businesses, stores, taverns and schools closed the day when "Victory in Europe" was declared by President Truman. VE Day is featured in three episodes of "Radio Superior" May 2, May 7, and May 8, 1945, on KUWS 91.3 FM, Superior and WUWS 90.9 FM Ashland Friday beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Hosted by radio veterans Jack McKenna and Lew Martin, the episodes includes reaction from local citizens and politicians. There were no celebrations locally with Germany's surrender because the war against Japan was continuing in the Pacific.
This episode also includes the original surrender report by Associated Press correspondent Edward Kennedy from Reims, France, the site of the German surrender to General Dwight D. Eisenhower.
"Radio Superior" airs episodes every Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wisconsin Public Radio stations in the Northland. They are locally produced using area actors and actual news stories and advertisement from the Superior Evening Telegram archives and music of the era.
