Prep report: Duluth East holds off CEC in boys hockey

Duluth East bounced back from a home loss to Elk River on Tuesday by fending off rival Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 3-2 Thursday night in a high school boys hockey game in Cloquet.

Nick Altmann and Bryton Lutzka got the Greyhounds (3-1) on the board with first-period goals, and Auston Crist notched what turned out to be the game-winner midway through the second period. Crist's goal came five minutes after Kyle Klatt had cut the Lumberjacks' deficit to 2-1.

Derek Bloom tallied in the third, but CEC (2-3-1) couldn't get any closer.

Goaltender Gunnar Howg stopped 31 shots for East, while Zack Strom had 25 saves for the Lumberjacks.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Fond du Lac 96,

North Woods 74

One game after scoring 48 points on the strength of 10 3-pointers, Fond du Lac sophomore Jordan Diver had 32 in Thursday's home win.

Fond du Lac, averaging better than 97 points per game, improved to 3-0.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Grand Rapids 70,

Duluth Denfeld 38

The visiting Thunderhawks (4-1) won their third straight as Hannah Morris (16) and Taylor Kane (14) combined for 30 points.

Lexi Hill scored 14 points to pace the Hunters (1-4), who dropped their fourth straight.

Superior 78, Proctor 38

The Spartans (3-0) continued their early season trend of strong defensive second halves as they held the Rails to nine points after halftime in Thursday's road victory.

Jessica Lindstrom led all scorers with 22 points.
