Motorists are experiencing traffic congestion on Hammond Avenue due to the Bong Bridge lane closures. There is heavy backup at peak times, and Hammond can also be blocked by railroad traffic.

The Superior Police Department is recommending that motorists consider accessing Highways 2/53 via Belknap Street or other signal-controlled intersections such as 18th Avenue East or 22nd Avenue East, and accessing the Blatnik Bridge via U.S. Highway 53. Other routes include Tower Avenue to North Third Street, Grand Avenue and Catlin Ave. Motorists are advised to avoid the congestion being experienced on Hammond by using these alternate routes.

Traffic was slowed even more Wednesday due to scheduled maintenance that closed one of the Duluth-bound lanes of the Blatnik Bridge. The Minnesota Department of Transportation rescheduled the maintenance work after the lane closure caused significant traffic impacts on the bridge and east approach to the bridge.

“We had scheduled the work on the Blatnik Bridge this week as part of our summer bridge maintenance plan,” said District Engineer Duane Hill. “We had to close one lane on the bridge to ensure a safe work area. We discovered that reducing the traffic lanes on Blatnik caused a significant traffic backup. We stopped our work and will reschedule it.”

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is doing a major rehabilitation project on the Bong Bridge. The Duluth-bound lanes were closed to traffic on Monday and will be closed until Nov. 1, 2014.  Next year, the eastbound lanes will close.
