The Northwestern High School boys basketball team defeated the Hayward Hurricanes 65-49 Friday night in Maple.

The Tigers improve to 9-4 overall and 4-4 in the Heart O’ North Conference. Hayward falls to 6-9 overall and 4-5 in the HON.

Northwestern took a four-point lead after the first quarter and led 33-24 at halftime before finishing out the game at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. The Tigers went 14-for-19 at the line in the fourth quarter and 21-for-29 for the game. Hayward was 14-for-22 at the free-throw line.

Hayward’s Joe Stark led all scorers with 17 points.

Four players finished in double figures for Northwestern. Brayden Bartelt led with 14 points, Mitch Graskey had 13, Trevor Paulus had 12 and Jeffrey Priem had 10.

Northwestern hosts Cumberland at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.
