It was a beautiful night for racing at AMSOIL Speedway something that has not been said very much in the 2014 season. The great weather brought out a large contingent of fans and the car count reached triple digits for the first time this season with 110 cars in action.
Officials dispensed with hot laps and went right into racing as there was plenty of action on tap for the night. Three of the five make up features from the Monsoon ended program the previous Friday were scheduled before the regular weekly program would be run.
In the Midwest Modified make up feature Jake Gondik won his first ever feature at AMSOIL Speedway over Dan Kingsley, Deven VanHouse, Don Craig and Jesse Ogston.
Dave Flynn won his second Super Stock feature of the season at the speedway taking the win over Shane Kisling, Andy Davey, Willie Johnsen Jr. and Don Muzzy.
Harry Hanson topped the Late Model make-up event with a convincing win over Darrell Nelson, Kyle Peterlin, Greg Ferris and Trevor Wilson.
With those events made up it was time for qualifying heat races. With 110 cars in attendance each of the five classes had three heats totaling 15 before features could be run. Officials hustled right along eliminating the intermission.
First up were the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds and all 28 cars were to start the 20-lap feature.
The event got off to a ragged start as it took four tries to get in the first lap. Once all of that was out of the way, the race boiled down to a duel for the win between the Estey brothers Mack and Skeeter, who started in the fourth and fifth row, respectively.
Time was a factor in the event and after a red flag for Cole Spacek’s wreck in turn one the laps remaining were reduced to two setting up a green/white/checkered situation. Mack was able to hold off older brother Skeeter for his first feature win at the speedway and the sweep of the action. Jesse Ogston, Dan Kingsley and Deven VanHouse finished in the top five.
Next up was the 20-lap WISSOTA Super Stock feature.
Derek Vesel led early but it was Shane Kisling who tracked down the leader, passed and built
up a lead of his own. A caution flag let Scott Lawrence who had started in the fourth row join the battle for the lead between Nick Oreskovich and Kisling.
Another caution period with five laps remaining gave Lawrence a chance to move to second and have a shot at the win on the final lap but Kisling was able to take the win by about a half car length. Oreskovich, Kevin Burdick and Andy Davey were top five finishers.
It was also 20 laps for the WISSOTA Late Models.
After a quick caution flag for debris in turn three, the race went non stopped the rest of the way and Darrell Nelson bested Harry Hanson with Jeff Massingill turning in a great performance leading early and holding on for a third place finish. Steve Laursen and Terry Lillo rounded out the top five.
The Modified feature turned out to be the best of the night as a pair of veteran drivers put on a driving clinic.
Darrell Nelson and Kelly Estey wasted little time joining in a duel that saw them run wheel-to-wheel lap after lap exchanging the lead lap after lap.
As the laps wound down and they began to lap cars at the back of the pack, Nelson was able to use the car of Cody Wolkowski as a pick to gain some distance on Estey and take the win. Jody Bellefeuille, Al Uotinen and Kevin Eder finished in the top five.
Uotinen’s record of consecutive feature laps completed now stands at 890. It was Nelson’s first Modified win at the speedway in 2014.
The final feature of the evening was 15 laps for the Pure Stocks.
Dustin Follett started outside the fifth row and made his way to second as Ryan Savoy had command of the event. Savoy’s car pulled out the left rear axle and wheel and Follett could not avoid running over it. Follett’s No. 3D caught some serious air but was able to continue. He inherited the lead and went on to take his fifth straight feature win.
Lucas Carlson, Matt Hammitt, defending track champion Mike Blevins, who started 19th, and Jon Hammitt finished in the top five.
