Neduzak, Rey notch hat tricks in UWS win over Stout

Jordan Neduzak and Michael Rey both notched hat tricks to give the University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s hockey team a 6-3 win over UW-Stout in the opening game of the WIAC tournament Tuesday night at Wessman Arena.

The Yellowjackets will now play a two-game semifinal series at UW-River Falls at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday. UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stevens Point will play in the other semifinal series in Stevens Point. The winners will play in the championship game on March 8.

Superior took a 2-0 lead on Stout with Rey’s first-period goal and Neduzak’s goal 5:16 into the second period.

Stout took a 3-2 lead after two periods with goals by Kevin O’Donnell, Craig Lindegard and Riley Colvand.

The Yellowjackets bounced back in a big way with a four-goal third period.

Rey scored 1:59 into the final period, Neduzak scored at 10:34 and 13:22, and Rey put the puck into an empty net with 1:43 remaining.

Dayn Belfour picked up the win in goal for Superior with 34 saves. Corey Koop had 36 saves for the Blue Devils.

UWS and UWRF split during the regular season with the Falcons winning 2-1 and the Yellowajckets winning 2-1 in overtime. Both games were played at Wessman Arena.

Both games this weekend at W.H. Hunt Arena in River Falls may be heard locally on KUWS 91.3 FM.

’JACKET JOTTINGS: The hat tricks were the first for a UWS player since 2008 when Braden Desmet scored three times against Lake Forest as a junior. … Rey leads UWS with 14 goals, while Neduzak snapped an 18-game goal drought on Saturday against Stevens Point. The freshman now has seven goals and five assists for 12 points. …. Stout took three penalties for six minutes while the Yellowjackets took two penalties for four minutes. Both teams were scoreless on the power play.
