Milwaukee mayor hospitalized after birthday run
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett is spending his 60th birthday overnight in a hospital where he is being treated for exhaustion following a 20-kilometer run.
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/1fbpyRA) that Barrett ran the race Sunday indoors at the Pettit national Ice Center. Spokesman Jeff Fleming says Barrett finished Sunday's run before requiring medical attention. Barrett turned 60 on Sunday and wanted to run for 60 minutes, Fleming said.
An ambulance transported Barrett to Froedtert Hospital, where he is being treated for dehydration and exhaustion. Fleming says Barrett was expected to return home Monday after an overnight stay in the hospital.
Fleming describes Barrett as a regular runner but says Sunday's run of nearly 12½ miles is a far greater distance than his usual routine.
