Rick Lubbers has been named the new editor of the Duluth News Tribune.

Lubbers is the sports editor at the News Tribune but is a longtime employee of the Duluth Newspaper Group, having also worked at the Duluth Budgeteer and Superior Daily Telegram over the course of his career. He has experience both in sports and news, and previously held the position of city night editor at the News Tribune.

"I am very excited to work side by side with the talented journalists at the News Tribune to give readers the most informative, timely and entertaining news source in the Northland," Lubbers said.

The announcement was made to the newsroom Wednesday. Lubbers was chosen after a nationwide editor search. He replaces Robin Washington, who left the News Tribune this year.

“Rick clearly has the vision and energy to take this newspaper forward,” said Mary Jo Hotzler, director of Content Services for Forum Communications Co., which owns the Duluth News Tribune and Forum News Service. “He’s truly a leader for the newsroom and will be in the community as well.”

As editor, Lubbers will be responsible for setting and communicating editorial direction for both the newspaper and the website.

“Rick has proven leadership skills, a deep knowledge of our region, and solid journalism skills,” said Ken Browall, Duluth News Tribune publisher. “I am excited to have Rick lead our news team as we reorganize our feature sections and put a focus on enterprise reporting. Rick's journalistic instincts and communication skills will serve our news staff well.”

Rick and his wife, Leah, have a son and a daughter. They live in South Range, Wis.
